Before entering Formula 1, Jacques achieved notable success in the American CART series, winning the Indianapolis 500 and the CART Championship in 1995. He debuted in Formula 1 with the Williams team in 1996 and quickly made an impact, securing the World Championship in his second season and famously defeating Michael Schumacher.
