Sergio Pérez in critical talks with Red Bull amid F1 exit speculations
Sergio Pérez is engaged in crucial discussions with Red Bull to determine the "right way forward," as his departure from Formula 1 seems imminent. According to sources, Red Bull intends to conclude their association with Pérez following these talks, a sentiment echoed by both team principal Christian Horner and Pérez himself after the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Pérez’s final race at Yas Marina was cut short after just two laps, capping off a disappointing season where he was significantly outperformed by his teammate, Max Verstappen, who outscored him by 285 points.
"We'll sit down with him and reflect on the season, obviously where it's gone wrong, and collectively work out what is the right and appropriate way forward," Horner remarked. "The benchmark is always your teammate. And the car has won nine races with Max at the wheel. [But] it's been far from the easiest car, and Max is the hardest teammate in the world to have."
Discussions have also taken place between Horner and Pérez's agent Julian Jakobi to negotiate an amicable separation. Pérez, who signed a two-year contract extension in June, scored just 49 points in the last 18 races and acknowledged the possibility of not remaining with the team. "We will discuss what's the situation from both parties if we are able to reach an agreement," Pérez stated. "If not, I have a contract for next year."
The potential timeline for a final decision remains uncertain. Sources suggest Red Bull might move Pérez into a wider ambassadorial role, maintaining his current salary, although this would involve fewer responsibilities such as show runs and marketing appearances. Liam Lawson has been tipped to replace Pérez, having stepped in as Daniel Ricciardo's replacement at the U.S. Grand Prix.
Red Bull’s driver strategy has faced complexities throughout the season. Hopes were pinned on young driver Isack Hadjar to win the Formula 2 championship, a move designed to ease the optics of team decisions. However, Hadjar’s loss to Gabriel Bortoleto has left the lineup in flux.
In a season where McLaren clinched the constructors' championship, Horner highlighted the necessity of having two consistent drivers. "Having two drivers scoring on a regular basis in the constructors' championship is crucial," he said. "For our team, it's very important that both of our drivers deliver, and there's not a significant gap."
