Abu Dhabi GP: McLaren clinches first constructors' title since 1998

McLaren triumphantly sealed the Formula 1 constructors' championship, marking their first title in this category since 1998 and first Formula 1 championship since Lewis Hamilton clinched the drivers' title in 2008.

This victory not only signifies a strategic turnaround but also an end to a 26-year wait, reigniting the team's legacy in top-flight motorsport competition.

The conclusion of the season was nothing short of dramatic, with Lando Norris securing a crucial win on Sunday that saw him outpace both Ferrari drivers, Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, on the podium. This performance from Norris provided a substantial boost, ensuring a comfortable margin for McLaren to clinch the title by 14 points over their closest rivals, Ferrari.

However, the race was fraught with tension for McLaren following an early incident involving Oscar Piastri and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. The first-corner clash led to Verstappen receiving a penalty, and Piastri, despite later being penalized himself for an altercation with Franco Colapinto, managed to finish in 10th place, contributing crucially to McLaren's points tally.

This constructors' championship marks McLaren's ninth overall, drawing them level with Williams as the second most successful F1 team in history in terms of constructors' titles, behind only Ferrari's 16. The achievement is a testament to McLaren's resurgence in the competitive hierarchy, propelled by a significant mid-season upgrade introduced at the Miami Grand Prix, which escalated both Norris and Piastri into the winner's circle more consistently.

Coming into the final races, McLaren had overtaken a faltering Red Bull team in the standings during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in mid-September, effectively halting Red Bull’s dominance after 55 races. From there, McLaren only grew stronger, with Ferrari emerging as their sole challenger in the latter part of the season.

While Norris was ultimately out of the running for the drivers' championship following the Las Vegas Grand Prix, his valiant efforts throughout the season were instrumental in challenging Verstappen and ultimately, in securing the much-coveted constructors' title for McLaren. This victory not only celebrates a monumental moment for the team but also sets a formidable precedent for the coming seasons in Formula 1.
