Esteban Ocon reflects on a bittersweet departure from Alpine amidst Abu Dhabi Grand Prix shift

In a surprising turn of events at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Esteban Ocon's tenure with Alpine has reached an unforeseen conclusion, as the team opts for Jack Doohan to take his place in the season finale. Ocon, who has been a key figure in the team since 2020, expressed a mixture of gratitude and regret over the abrupt end to his journey with Alpine.

The decision to replace Ocon with Doohan not only marks an early debut for the latter but also enables Ocon to commence his upcoming stint with Haas during next week's test sessions at the same venue. Despite the strategic move, Ocon's disappointment was palpable. "This is not how I want things to end," the French driver stated, underscoring the emotional weight of his exit.

Ocon's contributions to Alpine have been significant, particularly highlighted by his victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2021 – Alpine's first and only win in Formula 1 to date. Additionally, his collaboration with teammate Pierre Gasly led to a memorable double podium for the team at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in November. Such achievements have not only been milestones for Alpine but also for Ocon's career.

In a heartfelt message on social media, Ocon extended his gratitude to everyone at Alpine, from the mechanics and engineers to the staff at Enstone and Viry-Châtillon, acknowledging the collective effort and success they achieved together. Despite achieving remarkable results, including assisting the team to finish fourth in the Constructors' Championship in 2022, Ocon hinted at the challenges faced during the latter part of the season without delving into specifics.

"It has not been an easy year on track for the team and the second part of the season has been especially difficult. For various reasons," Ocon revealed, adding that he leaves with no regrets, confident in the effort he put forth every time he raced. However, the inability to bid a proper farewell in person to the Alpine team seemed to weigh heavily on him.

Ocon's departure was met with respect and acknowledgment from Alpine, with the team's official Instagram account commenting, "Forever engrained in the Team's history. Thank you Esteban. Best of luck." This sign-off not only celebrates Ocon's contributions but also signals a new chapter for both the driver and the team.

As the Formula 1 community looks toward the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Ocon's legacy with Alpine and his encouragement for Doohan as he steps into the limelight underscore a sport that is as much about camaraderie and sportsmanship as it is about competition and victory.
