Jack Doohan may step up for Alpine in Abu Dhabi finale

Alpine F1 Team appears to be considering a significant lineup change for the season finale in Abu Dhabi, with Australian Jack Doohan being lined up as a potential replacement for Esteban Ocon. While there is yet no formal confirmation from the Renault-owned team, Team Principal Oliver Oakes has been quoted discussing the possibility with reporters.

This move, should it manifest, would mark Doohan's Formula 1 race debut, shaking up the grid as Esteban Ocon prepares for his transition to Haas. Oakes points to the mutual benefits of such an arrangement, suggesting that "I guess you could say it's good to get Jack in early. I think you could say from Esteban's side it's good to move on early," he elaborated. "I think it suits everybody. So I think the discussion is quite natural really."

Doohan, the 21-year-old reserve driver and progeny of motorcycling legend Mick Doohan, is poised to take over Ocon's seat starting next season, kicking off in Melbourne – his home country. This early introduction to Formula 1 racing is seen as a chance to acclimate Doohan, allowing him to "get those butterflies gone now rather than next year in Australia," according to Oakes.

For Ocon, this presents an opportunity to engage with Haas earlier than anticipated, with the possibility of joining their testing in Abu Dhabi post-season. Mercedes and their team head, Toto Wolff, seem to have a stake in the proceedings, given Ocon's existing Mercedes contract. Wolff hinted at forthcoming decisions in this strategic move, stating, "If you agree that, for the benefit of the future, there's a better solution that allows Esteban to get ready early and better for Haas - and if that depends on driving or not in Abu Dhabi - this is something we discussed today and we're going to talk about it tomorrow."

The backdrop to all these potential changes is Alpine's current position in the F1 Constructors’ Championship, with only a five-point lead over Haas. Ocon's retirement from the Qatar Grand Prix following a collision added tension to the team's standings, and his remarks afterwards resonated with the air of a culmination. "I would like to thank the team for, you know, their hard work over this race and their hard work over the whole year," Ocon expressed.

Ocon's French teammate, Pierre Gasly, continued to show his prowess on the circuit with a commendable fifth-place finish in Sunday's Qatar GP, suggesting underlying strength for Alpine should they decide to shift their driver lineup. As the F1 community awaits an official word from Alpine, all eyes will be on Abu Dhabi to see if Jack Doohan will indeed ascend to the top-tier stage of motorsports earlier than anticipated.
