As the Formula 1 season approaches its climax, the rivalry and banter between drivers heat up, showcasing the competitive spirit and camaraderie that defines the sport. Recently crowned Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen made a bold assertion following his victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, claiming that had he been behind the wheel of a McLaren this season, his championship win would have come even sooner.

When these remarks were conveyed to Lando Norris, Verstappen's main rival in the latter stages of the 2024 season, the McLaren driver quipped, "He should start doing comedy or something. He can say whatever he wants." Norris, who clinched three race wins this year compared to Verstappen's eight, openly disagreed with the champion's speculative scenario. "Of course, I completely disagree -- as I would. He's good, but, yeah, it's not true."

The discussions come at a time when McLaren leads the constructors' championship, ahead of Ferrari and Verstappen's team, Red Bull. Norris pointed out that though Red Bull might not top the constructors' chart, it had the strongest setup this season—a fact he attributes partly to the performance disparity between Verstappen and his teammate, Sergio Pérez. "Red Bull probably would have won the constructors' if they had two drivers as good as Max, that's for sure," Norris commented, highlighting the impact of team dynamics on championship outcomes.

Despite the fierce competition and some on-track incidents that have seen the drivers at loggerheads—such as collisions in Austria and races in Austin and Mexico—Norris affirmed that the title fight has not strained his relationship with Verstappen. The two have shared moments of celebration and mutual respect, such as following Norris's maiden victory in Miami earlier this year.

Reflecting on their relationship, Norris mentioned, "No. There were some tougher moments but we're still good friends. We had a nice word with each other after the race last weekend. I still have a lot of respect for him and what he's done, so from my side all good."

As the season winds down with only two races left, the interplay of competitive zeal and friendship between Norris and Verstappen adds an interesting layer to the unfolding drama of Formula 1, capturing the essence of rivalry enriched by respect and sportsmanship.
