Monza secures its place on F1 calendar through 2031 with six-year extension

In a significant announcement, Formula 1 has confirmed that the Italian Grand Prix will maintain its proud position on the racing calendar until at least 2031. This extension of six years builds on the current agreement set to expire in 2025, ensuring Monza's place in the sport for the next decade.

Renowned as "The Temple of Speed," Monza is famed for its high-velocity thrills, with drivers often pushing the limits to over 350kph. This iconic circuit has been a staple in the Grand Prix lineup since the world championship's inception in 1950, with the exception of 1980 due to renovations.

Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Monza is at the very heart of Formula One history and the atmosphere each year is unique as the Tifosi gather in huge numbers to cheer on Ferrari and the drivers." He highlighted the recent and planned investments in the circuit's infrastructure as a testament to the commitment to Formula One's future in Italy.

Monza, constructed in 1922, is the spiritual home of Ferrari, the most successful team at this circuit. Their latest triumph came this year when Charles Leclerc seized victory, continuing Ferrari's legacy of success at Monza.

While Italy boasts another F1 location in Imola, its future post-2026 remains uncertain. Stefano Domenicali, who has personal ties to Imola, noted the growing candidates for F1 races, including potentials in Africa, and mentioned the possibility that some European circuits might have to alternate slots in a calendar that has expanded to a record 24 rounds.

Both Italian circuits, celebrated for their atmosphere and history, stand in contrast to the modern, lavish tracks seen in the Middle East and North America. However, Angelo Sticchi Damiani, president of the Automobile Club d'Italia, remarked, "We are all aware that history is no longer enough." Following improvements like resurfacing the track and enhancing underpasses for safety, a challenge for 2025 has been set to boost the quality and quantity of hospitality offerings, ensuring Monza's evolution alongside its storied past.

As Formula 1 continues to blend the rich history of its traditional European circuits with the grandeur of new locations, Monza's secured place on the calendar through 2031 is a testament to its enduring appeal and significance in the world of motorsport.
