Williams' Franco Colapinto set for Las Vegas GP after qualifying crash scare

In a significant development leading up to the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Williams Racing's Franco Colapinto has been given the all-clear to compete in Saturday's race after a worrying crash during the qualifying round raised doubts about his participation.

Colapinto's qualifying session came to an abrupt end when his car made heavy contact with the barriers at Turn 16, causing concern due to the sheer force of the impact, which was recorded at over 50G. The incident prompted immediate medical attention, with Colapinto walking away from the wreckage, albeit requiring further evaluation the following day to confirm his fitness to race.

Williams Racing released a statement earlier today confirming that, following a comprehensive medical review, Colapinto has been deemed fit to partake in tonight's eagerly anticipated race. "Following Franco's incident in qualifying yesterday, he has undergone a thorough follow-up evaluation from the event medical team today and has been cleared to race in this evening's Las Vegas Grand Prix," the team announced, emphasizing their relief and gratitude toward the medical staff for their dedication to Colapinto's well-being.

The Argentine driver's vehicle sustained significant damage. However, the Williams team's mechanics and engineers worked tirelessly through the night to ensure the car could make it to the starting line. In lieu of the extensive repairs and adjustments made, Colapinto will forgo his original 14th-place starting position and instead begin the race from the pit lane, a strategic decision that also allowed the team to implement beneficial setup changes.

Williams' statement further highlighted the team’s appreciation for the hard work and support from their crew and fans, expressing optimism for the night’s race: "We are extremely thankful to our incredible garage team for their hard work overnight to repair Franco's car and our fans and partners for their continued support," they stated.

Franco Colapinto's crash in Brazil, which resulted in substantial financial loss for Williams, did little to dampen the young driver's spirit and determination. Having stepped in as a replacement for Logan Sargeant since the Italian Grand Prix, Colapinto has shown promising performances, though his future with the team beyond 2024 remains undecided.

As night falls in Las Vegas, all eyes will be on Colapinto as he aims to make a strong comeback from the pit lane, marking another chapter in the rookie's emerging Formula 1 career.
