Monaco GP extended on F1 calendar to 2031

Formula 1's iconic Monaco Grand Prix will continue thrilling fans until at least 2031, following a six-year extension announced on Thursday. As part of the extension, from 2026 onwards, the prestigious race will move to the first full weekend in June, avoiding future clashes with the Indianapolis 500.

The Monaco GP, a staple on the F1 calendar since the inaugural world championship season in 1950, was only absent in 2020 due to the global pandemic. The race's historical significance remains unmatched, making it one of the crown jewels of the F1 championship.

"I'm delighted that Formula 1 will continue to race in Monaco until 2031," said F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali. "The streets of Monte Carlo are unique and a famous part of Formula 1, and the Monaco Grand Prix remains a race that all drivers dream of winning. This agreement signals a new era of partnership and innovation between Formula 1 and Monaco."

Domenicali highlighted that the new agreement will help F1 create an optimized calendar, easing logistical pressures and reducing the environmental impact as the sport moves toward its net zero goal by 2030.

This shift comes after the 2023 season, where the Monaco GP was sandwiched between races in Imola, Italy, and Montreal, Canada, with a prior round in Miami. F1 aims to establish a more logical flow of races based on regional groupings, streamlining the championship's global logistics.

The 2023 Monaco GP drew huge interest, with a cumulative audience of over 70 million viewers worldwide, making it the third most-watched F1 race ever in the United States. The event remains a massive draw, as underscored by Michel Boeri, president of the Automobile Club of Monaco. "The Monaco Grand Prix is the most important sporting event here and continues to attract hundreds of thousands of spectators to the principality and millions of global television viewers worldwide," Boeri said.

Adding to the excitement, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc clinched victory at his home race from pole position, further cementing the race's status as a fan favorite and a pivotal event on the F1 calendar.

The extension of the Monaco Grand Prix underlines Formula 1's commitment to preserving the heritage and spectacle of its most storied venues while working towards a sustainable and logistically efficient future.
