Alpine to utilize Mercedes engines starting in 2026

Alpine, Renault's Formula 1 outfit, has confirmed that it will be powered by Mercedes engines from the 2026 season onwards. The team announced the new partnership on Tuesday, marking a significant shift in the competitive dynamics of the sport.

The agreement, which also includes a gearbox supply, was largely anticipated following Alpine's decision to cease its own engine program in France. The collaboration is set to commence alongside the introduction of new F1 regulations in 2026 and will extend through to 2030.

Earlier in the year, Alpine brought in former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore to aid in securing this pivotal engine supply deal. Despite the changes, Renault has assured fans and stakeholders that there are no intentions to sell the team outright.

The 2023 season has been challenging for Alpine, both on and off the track. However, the team managed to achieve an unexpected double podium finish in Brazil, a rare highlight in an otherwise tough year. New team boss Oliver Oakes has tempered expectations, stating earlier in the year that it will take several years for Alpine to consistently contend for podium finishes on merit.

The Mercedes engine deal represents a significant step towards that goal, potentially ushering in a new era of competitiveness for Alpine as it aligns with one of the most successful engine manufacturers in Formula 1 history.

With these strategic moves, Alpine aims to bolster its performance and competitiveness, setting the stage for a promising future as it prepares for the significant changes in 2026.
