Sauber announce Gabriel Bortoleto for 2025 F1 season

In a noteworthy development in the world of Formula 1, Sauber has confirmed that Brazil's Gabriel Bortoleto will be joining the team for the 2025 season, racing alongside Nico Hulkenberg. This move comes as Sauber gears up for its transition to Audi in 2026.

A transition phase for Sauber team

Announced on Wednesday, current drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will be parting ways with the team at the end of this season. Bottas, a seasoned driver, raised the possibility of returning to his former team, Mercedes, as a reserve driver. Reflecting on his contributions, Sauber stated, "Within the driver line-up, Valtteri has been a driving force, elevating both his teammate and the team with his unparalleled experience, enthusiasm, invaluable technical insights, and fighting spirit."

As for Zhou Guanyu, Sauber's statement highlighted his impressive growth: "Joining as a rookie, Zhou formed a strong partnership with his teammate, Valtteri Bottas. Zhou's learning curve was steep, but the Shanghai-born driver made quick progression and established himself as a reliable performer and an exciting driver with a knack for attacking."

Rising star from Formula 2

Bortoleto, hailing from Sao Paulo, transitions from Formula 2, where he currently leads the championship with two rounds remaining. The 20-year-old driver, who also joined McLaren's driver programme in 2023, is considered one of the most promising young talents in the motorsport world.

In their official statement, Sauber remarked, "We are currently witnessing a generational shift in Formula 1, with young drivers immediately making an impact. By signing Gabriel Bortoleto, we have secured one of these top talents. His signing underscores Audi's long-term strategy and commitment to Formula 1."

Expressing his enthusiasm, Bortoleto stated, "Joining a team that combines the rich motorsport history of Sauber and Audi is a true honor. Beyond simply being a member, I aim to grow with this ambitious project and reach the pinnacle of motorsport."

As the 2024 season approaches its conclusion with three races still to go, Zhou Guanyu and the team remain resolute. Sauber affirmed, "Zhou and the team will try their best to finish this journey in the most successful way possible: there's a job to do, and everyone in the team is determined to get it done in the best manner."

The addition of Gabriel Bortoleto signals Sauber's commitment to fostering young talent and underscores the team's exciting vision for the future as they pivot towards becoming Audi’s factory team.
