Williams' James Vowles discusses Franco Colapinto's future in Formula 1

Williams' Vowles negotiating Colapinto's F1 prospects

Williams team principal James Vowles is actively engaging with other F1 teams concerning Franco Colapinto's future.

The Argentine driver, who joined Williams' academy in early 2023 and demonstrated impressive performance in his first five races, faces uncertainty as Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz are secured for Williams next year.

During the Mexico Grand Prix, it was revealed that Red Bull's team principal, Christian Horner, expressed interest in Colapinto for 2024. Red Bull’s second team, RB, has not yet decided who will partner Yuki Tsunoda in 2025, leaving potential opportunities open amid Liam Lawson’s possible promotion.

Sauber remains another viable option with a seat available for 2025. Vowles confirmed discussions are ongoing but stayed tight-lipped on specifics. “We’re working with interested teams to find the right arrangement for Franco,” Vowles stated. “He’s earning his place, and our responsibility is towards both him and Williams.”

Vowles anticipates a resolution by the season's end, emphasizing the complexity of multi-team negotiations.

Meanwhile, McLaren hints at potential changes for their junior driver, Gabriele Bortoleto. The Brazilian, leading the Formula 2 championship, has attracted Sauber’s interest for 2025. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella confirmed they wouldn't block Bortoleto’s F1 progression, acknowledging his impressive junior category performances. Talks are ongoing to determine his future trajectory.
