FIA cancels planned rookie sprint race in Abu Dhabi as focus shifts to 2025

In a recent announcement, the FIA confirmed that the anticipated rookie sprint race, initially planned to take place in Abu Dhabi following the final grand prix of the season, will not be held in 2024. This decision emerged after thorough discussions during a meeting of the Formula 1 commission at the RB team’s factory in Faenza, Italy.

The concept, designed to provide a platform for rookie drivers to showcase their skills in a competitive environment, had garnered considerable support. However, as the FIA stated, "While the concept received widespread support, it was determined that due to timing and organisational constraints, the event would not take place in 2024."

Intended to feature a sprint format, the event would have included qualifying and a 100km race on the same day, offering up to 10 rookie drivers the opportunity to race against each other without teams having to worry about potential car damage.

Despite the setback, there remains optimism for the future as the FIA assured, "Discussions will continue to formulate a potential concept and plan for 2025."

The final grand prix of the season is slated for December 8 at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. As stakeholders continue to deliberate, the racing community eagerly anticipates the development of a viable format for showcasing emerging talent in the sport.
