In a significant move within the world of Formula One, star designer Adrian Newey is anticipated to join Aston Martin in 2025. The team is expected to confirm the news at a press conference scheduled for next Tuesday at their Silverstone factory.

Aston Martin has extended invitations to the media for this press event, which will include senior leadership. Sources and widespread media reports hint that the primary agenda will be the announcement of Newey’s signing.

While Eddie Jordan, who founded the team that now operates under the Aston Martin banner and acts as Newey's manager, declined to comment when contacted by Reuters, a spokesman for the team also withheld details.

Newey's legacy and career shift

Newey, 65, revealed in May that he would leave Red Bull, mentioning his pursuit of new challenges as his reason. During his tenure, Newey-designed cars have secured 25 drivers' and constructors' championships across stints with Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull. The 2023 Red Bull car, in particular, was a standout, clinching 21 wins from 22 races, a record in Formula One history.

Red Bull currently leads both drivers' and constructors' championships but has seen a dip in performance, allowing McLaren to close the gap to just eight points. Aston Martin, on the other hand, has been vocal about their aim to rope in Newey, especially ahead of a significant rules revamp expected in 2026.

Gary Anderson, a former designer for Jordan and Jaguar, recently noted in the Daily Telegraph, "If Red Bull still had Newey, 2026 is where his head would be going. He knows that anything you learn from the next two years will be valuable to put into the data bank to understand the 2026 solution even better."

The Daily Mail has reported that Newey’s deal with Aston Martin will see him earning £20 million ($26.29 million) annually. The team, owned by Canadian businessman Lawrence Stroll, includes 43-year-old double world champion Fernando Alonso and Stroll's son, Lance, among its drivers, all part of an ambitious plan to reach the pinnacle of Formula One.

Stroll's investments are evident, with considerable expansion at the team’s headquarters and the acquisition of top-tier talent from rival teams. Former Mercedes engine head Andy Cowell was appointed as the new chief executive officer in July, replacing ex-McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh. Additionally, former Ferrari technical director Enrico Cardile has been brought on board.

Strategic partnership with Honda

Currently, fifth in the standings, Aston Martin is also set for an exclusive new partnership with Honda, Red Bull's current engine suppliers, starting in 2026.

Newey’s anticipated arrival and the partnership with Honda align with Aston Martin’s strategy to become a formidable force in the new engine era and upcoming regulations, further indicating their long-term commitment to achieving top-tier performance in Formula One.
