F1 safety car collides with barriers during Monza test run
MONZA, Italy – In an unexpected turn of events ahead of this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, Formula One's Safety Car crashed into the barriers during its customary test run at the Monza circuit.
The vehicle in question, an Aston Martin Vantage F1 Edition, lost control at the renowned Parabolica hairpin, careening across the asphalt before coming to a halt after slamming side-on into the barriers.
Thursdays are typically reserved for media duties for F1 teams, while the Safety Car undergoes high-speed tests of the circuit. These tests are crucial as they involve completing system checks and fast laps to ensure the car is fully prepared for any intervention during the weekend's races.
Long-time Safety Car driver Bernd Mayländer, accompanied by passenger Richard Darker, fortunately escaped the crash unscathed.
In an official statement, the FIA confirmed that the incident is under investigation but assured fans and teams alike that "it will not impact the weekend's event." The organization noted that another Safety Car is on standby at the circuit, ready to be deployed if necessary.
The Safety Car plays a pivotal role during races, slowing the pace of the cars on track whenever there is a cautionary period, ensuring the safety of both drivers and track personnel.
