Breaking news: Williams and Red Bull discuss Liam Lawson loan move
Williams seeks Lawson as Sargeant's replacement for Italian Grand Prix.
ZANDVOORT, Netherlands – Williams has initiated discussions with Red Bull about a potential loan of reserve driver Liam Lawson to replace Logan Sargeant, starting from the upcoming Italian Grand Prix.
According to reports, Williams team principal James Vowles approached Red Bull's Christian Horner post-qualifying session on Saturday to deliberate on Lawson's availability.
Earlier in the day, Sargeant's mishap in the final practice, driving a Williams car equipped with newly upgraded components, has further strained the team's patience. Crashes have plagued Sargeant's season, and with Carlos Sainz set to replace him next year, the urgency for a short-term alternative has intensified.
Lawson, highly regarded for his performance as Daniel Ricciardo's substitute at three events in 2023, is a promising candidate. The New Zealander is also poised to drive for Red Bull's junior team next season.
In a post-race discussion at the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday, Horner expressed openness to the loan move, citing, "It depends on which terms and if we needed him back that we could have him back quite quickly. But we'd certainly ... if they needed a driver next weekend, we'd be open to that. But that's a Williams question rather than one for us."
A Tight Timeframe and Strategic Concerns
Insiders indicate that an agreement for Lawson to replace Sargeant at Monza remains uncertain due to the limited timeframe between the races in the Netherlands and Italy.
Moreover, Red Bull is cautious about deploying Lawson in the challenging street circuits of Baku and Singapore, which follow Monza.
Red Bull's contractual obligation necessitates a decision on Lawson's status for 2025 before September 15. Should he not secure a race seat with either Red Bull team by then, Lawson will be free to explore other opportunities.
The Stakes for Liam Lawson
Eager for a full-time F1 race seat, Lawson has spent the current year on the sidelines. While he is a strong contender to replace Ricciardo at Red Bull next year, the situation within the team, compounded by Sergio Perez's inconsistent performance, remains unpredictable.
As the discussions progress, the motorsport world watches closely to see if Lawson will make his Italian Grand Prix debut with Williams or continue to await his big break.
