Norris pushes Verstappen to the limit in thrilling Imola showdown
Lando Norris challenged Verstappen's dominance in Imola
IMOLA, Italy – Max Verstappen clinched another Formula One race victory at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix on Sunday, but it was no easy feat, thanks to an impressive challenge from Lando Norris and McLaren.
Verstappen's margin of victory—just 0.7 seconds over Norris—marked a stark contrast to the comfortable wins the Red Bull driver had enjoyed earlier in the season. The close finish highlighted a rare occasion where Verstappen had to fight hard for the win.
"F---ing hell, mate. Had to work for that," Verstappen exclaimed over his car radio after crossing the finish line, signaling the intensity of the race.
Norris, riding the momentum from his first F1 victory in Miami two weeks prior, nearly made it two in a row. His determined late charge in the race brought him tantalizingly close to challenging Verstappen for the win.
"I was just praying for one more lap," Norris later admitted.
Despite his second-place finish, Norris was confident another lap could have provided him the opportunity to use his Drag Reduction System (DRS) to attack Verstappen, who was within one second of the Red Bull driver at the end.
"At least he would have had to defend into Turn 1, and maybe something could have come from that, but one lap too late," Norris added. "It's a shame, but it is what it is, and we just struggled too much in the beginning of the race."
Verstappen’s win came from a weekend that included a pole position, his eighth in a row, and his fifth victory from seven races this year. However, the Dutch driver faced several uncharacteristic challenges, starting with a series of sloppy practice sessions on Friday.
Imola demonstrated that the Red Bull car, while still dominant, could be challenged. Norris' efforts in Miami and Imola have created a palpable shift in the season's landscape. Despite holding a 28-point lead in the championship and a 60-point advantage over Norris, Verstappen's path to victory now seems more contested.
"Well, Stefano [Domenicali, F1 CEO] has been asking us for weeks to try and make it closer at the end," joked Red Bull boss Christian Horner.
Several elements contributed to Sunday’s thrilling finish. Verstappen had three track limits violations, culminating in a black-and-white flag, indicating that one more infringement would result in a five-second penalty. Norris, maintaining a six-second gap for much of the race, capitalized on Verstappen’s struggles with tyre grip during the second stint.
"As soon as I swapped to the hard tyres … maybe not the first five to 10 laps, but after that, I was like, I'm not sure I can bring this to the end," Verstappen confessed, adding that at one point, his car got so loose he almost ended up in the grandstand.
Verstappen’s defensive driving, coupled with Norris' strategic tyre management, set the stage for a dramatic finale. Norris' racecraft and his ability to bring life back to his tyres demonstrated his growing prowess on the grid.
"Just very difficult, really weird lines that I had to take," Verstappen said of the race's final portion. "I was not sure if I could keep him behind, but I was just trying to do the best I could, pushing as hard as I could with the grip that I had. And yeah, luckily, it was just enough laps."
The race showcased two top drivers performing at their best. Verstappen managed to defend despite his compromised grip, while Norris displayed patience and precise timing in his attack.
Verstappen's endurance prowess wasn't limited to the track. He dual-tasked between his F1 duties and a 24-hour virtual race with Team Redline, winning the Nurburgring 24 Hours sim race by over 30 seconds.
"Two wins for you in a day, I think," quipped Horner post-race, highlighting Verstappen's impressive multitasking.
Despite competing in a virtual race the night before the Grand Prix, Verstappen dismissed concerns about its impact on his performance, joking, "I need to sleep as well."
When asked about participating in a virtual endurance race during an F1 weekend, Norris expressed openness but acknowledged the mental toll such an endeavor could take. Nonetheless, his performance at Imola affirmed his potential as a superstar in the making.
With Verstappen and Norris pushing each other to new heights, the 2023 F1 season promises more exhilarating battles ahead.
