Max Verstappen defends his father Jos against claims of interference at Red Bull, addressing the team's challenges and his own championship ambitions for 2025.
Max Verstappen has fiercely defended his father, Jos Verstappen, following accusations that the senior Verstappen's actions were undermining his son's success at Red Bull. Despite a dramatic year that saw both Verstappen Jnr claim another world title and Jos make headlines with controversial comments, Max insists his father has his best interests at heart.
Max Verstappen Responds to ‘Nonsense’ Claims About His Father
After Jos Verstappen made several high-profile comments, including criticisms aimed at Red Bull's Christian Horner, some suggested that his involvement was detrimental to Max’s performance. However, Max Verstappen dismissed these claims as “nonsense” and defended his father’s broader vision for both him and the team.
In an interview with De Telegraaf, Max explained, “That is nonsense. My father sees the bigger picture very quickly. He understands that certain things happening now will affect the future of both me and the team. Some people from the outside may not see that.”
Tensions at Red Bull: A Toxic Year Despite Success
While Max’s defense of his father is clear, there’s no denying the turbulence that has surrounded Red Bull this season. Tensions flared when Jos Verstappen was reportedly snubbed from a celebratory drive in Austria. This led to a public spat between him and Horner, forcing Max to step in and act as a mediator between the two.
Despite these internal challenges, Max Verstappen still managed to secure another Formula 1 world championship, though he acknowledged that the difficulties could jeopardize his chances for 2025. He stressed that without resolving the team's issues, repeating his championship win next season would be impossible.
Max Verstappen on Red Bull’s 2025 Prospects
Reflecting on the season’s struggles, Verstappen revealed that the team’s performance had been inconsistent after the Miami Grand Prix in early May, where the car issues became more apparent. Despite the struggles, Verstappen has remained resilient and managed to maintain a strong lead in the standings.
“Since the race in Miami, there have only been very few races in which I have had the fastest car,” Verstappen admitted. “And yet I have still managed to pull ahead since then. I am proud of how we as a team have dealt with the difficult races and often still got the most out of them.”
Red Bull’s 2025 Championship Bid: A Call for Improvement
Max Verstappen knows that to retain his world champion status in 2025, significant improvements must be made. He highlighted specific areas, such as the car’s performance over bumps and in slow corners, which remain Red Bull’s weak points. With these issues unresolved, Verstappen warns that his chances of winning next season could be severely compromised.
“If we continue like this, I will not be champion next year. It is that simple,” Verstappen stated. “We really have to make steps to be competitive next season. We all know that.”
He expressed trust in the Red Bull team’s ability to address the balance issues of the 2024 season, adding, “We know that it has to be better over the kerbs, bumps, and in the slow corners. Those are generally our weak points. If we are still beaten, it will be on the basis of pure speed.”
Max Verstappen’s candid remarks emphasize the work that lies ahead for Red Bull, not only in resolving internal team dynamics but also in ensuring that their car is competitive enough to challenge for the 2025 title.
