Boutsen made his F1 debut in 1983 with the Arrows team at the Belgian Grand Prix. Despite driving for a lower-tier team, he showcased his consistency and adaptability, securing points in an often uncompetitive car. His strong performances caught the attention of bigger teams in the paddock.
Benetton: A Strong Start in F1
In 1987, Boutsen joined Benetton, a team with strong backing and competitive machinery. Boutsen’s most successful period came when he joined Williams in 1989. The team, led by Frank Williams and Patrick Head, was one of the most competitive in F1. Boutsen’s first victory came at the 1989 Canadian Grand Prix, where he held off a competitive field in changing weather conditions. He claimed a second win at the 1989 Australian Grand Prix in wet weather, demonstrating his skill in challenging conditions.
His third and final victory came in 1990 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where he started from pole and executed a flawless race, showcasing his smooth driving style and racecraft. Despite these successes, Boutsen's time with Williams ended in 1990 as the team sought to recruit younger drivers and focus on a new engine partnership.
Later Career: Ligier and Jordan
After leaving Williams, Boutsen joined Ligier in 1991. However, the team struggled with competitiveness, and Boutsen found it difficult to replicate the success he had at Williams. In 1993, he moved to Jordan for his final F1 season. Faced with similar challenges, Boutsen retired mid-season, concluding his career with 163 Grand Prix starts.
