FP1: Sainz leads Verstappen and Leclerc in Hungary FP1

Carlos Sainz set the fastest time in the first practice session of the Hungarian Grand Prix, clocking a 1m 18.713s to top Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc.

The session began at 1330 local time under sweltering conditions, with numerous cars, including Sergio Perez’s RB20, fitted with aero rakes to test upgrades. Haas’s Oliver Bearman participated in his fourth FP1 of the year, while Oscar Piastri faced early technical issues in the McLaren garage.

Verstappen set an initial benchmark of 1m 19.831s on soft tires. George Russell encountered traffic issues with Yuki Tsunoda, while Lance Stroll struggled with his updated Aston Martin.

Ferrari's pace improved as the session progressed, with Sainz and Leclerc moving to the top. Sainz's best lap remained unbeaten, placing him 0.276s ahead of Verstappen. Leclerc settled for third, with Russell taking fourth.

Zhou Guanyu was fifth for Kick Sauber, followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris and Piastri in sixth and seventh. Tsunoda took P8, with Stroll and Lewis Hamilton completing the top 10.

Perez was 11th, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo (RB), Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon, and Valtteri Bottas. Logan Sargeant placed 16th for Williams, with Alpine’s Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon in 17th and 18th. Kevin Magnussen and Bearman rounded out the session in 19th and 20th.

Teams will debrief before returning for the second practice at 1700 local time.
